Opinion | Who Is Immune to the Coronavirus?

Other evidence supports this model. A recent peer-reviewed study led by a team from Erasmus University, in the Netherlands, published data from 12 patients showing that they had developed antibodies after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Several of my colleagues and students and I have statistically analyzed thousands of seasonal coronavirus cases in the United States and used a mathematical model to infer that immunity over a year or so is likely for the two seasonal coronaviruses most closely related to SARS-CoV-2 — an indication perhaps of how immunity to SARS-CoV-2 itself might also behave.
If it is true that infection creates immunity in most or all individuals and that the protection lasts a year or more, then the infection of increasing numbers of people in any given population will lead to the buildup of so-called herd immunity. As more and more people become immune to the virus, an infected individual has less and less chance of coming into contact with a person susceptible to infection. Eventually, herd immunity becomes pervasive enough that an infected person on average infects less than one other person; at that point, the number of cases starts to go down. If herd immunity is widespread enough, then even in the absence of measures designed to slow transmission, the virus will be contained — at least until immunity wanes or enough new people susceptible to infection are born.
At the moment, cases of Covid-19 have been undercounted because of limited testing — perhaps by a factor of 10 in some places, like Italy as of late last month. If the undercounting is around this level in other countries as well, then a majority of the population in much (if not all) of the world still is susceptible to infection, and herd immunity is a minor phenomenon right now. The long-term control of the virus depends on getting a majority of people to become immune, through infection and recovery or through vaccination — how large a majority depends on yet other parameters of the infection that remain unknown.
One concern has to do with the possibility of reinfection. South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that 91 patients who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and then tested negative for the virus later tested positive again. If some of these cases were indeed reinfections, they would cast doubt on the strength of the immunity the patients had developed.
An alternative possibility, which many scientists think is more likely, is that these patients had a false negative test in the middle of an ongoing infection, or that the infection had temporarily subsided and then re-emerged. South Korea’s C.D.C. is now working to assess the merit of all these explanations. As with other diseases for which it can be difficult to distinguish a new infection from a new flare-up of an old infection — like tuberculosis — the issue might be resolved by comparing the viral genome sequence from the first and the second periods of infection.
For now, it is reasonable to assume that only a minority of the world’s population is immune to SARS-CoV-2, even in hard-hit areas. How could this tentative picture evolve as better data come in? Early hints suggest that it could change in either direction.
It is possible that many more cases of Covid-19 have occurred than have been reported, even after accounting for limited testing. One recent study (not yet peer-reviewed) suggests that rather than, say, 10 times the number of detected cases, the United States may really have more like 100, or even 1,000, times the official number. This estimate is an indirect inference from statistical correlations. In emergencies, such indirect assessments can be early evidence of an important finding — or statistical flukes. But if this one is correct, then herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2 could be building faster than the commonly reported figures suggest.

Moreover, the 21-day nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus, which is supposed to end tomorrow, may see a possible extension. The prime minister Narendra Modi is likely to talk about the lockdown situation in the country tomorrow at 10 am."Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 10 AM on 14th April 2020," PMO India tweeted.
Further, to curb the spread of the virus outbreak, several states, including Delhi have identified containment zones or hotspots that are now completely sealed.
Globally, the novel coronavirus cases have shot past 1.85 million people and killed at least 114,000 worldwide, according to the latest data by Johns Hopkins University. New York state alone has more cases than any country. Italy has its lowest number of new deaths in three weeks, saying 431 people died in the past day to bring its total to 19,899. China reported 108 fresh cases of coronavirus, including 98 from people returning from other countries.

Nursing home deaths soar past 3,600 in alarming surge

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 3,600 deaths nationwide have been linked to coronavirus outbreaks in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, an alarming rise in just the past two weeks, according to the latest count by The Associated Press.
Because the federal government has not been releasing a count of its own, the AP has kept its own running tally based on media reports and state health departments. The latest count of at least 3,621 deaths is up from about 450 deaths just 10 days ago.
But the true toll among the 1 million mostly frail and elderly people who live in such facilities is likely much higher, experts say, because most state counts don't include those who died without ever being tested for COVID-19.

Outbreaks in just the past few weeks have included one at a nursing home in suburban Richmond, Virginia, that has killed 42 and infected more than 100, another at nursing home in central Indiana that has killed 24 and infected 16, and one at a veteran's home in Holyoke, Mass., that has killed 38, infected 88 and prompted a federal investigation. This comes weeks after an outbreak at a nursing home in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland that has so far claimed 43 lives.
And those are just the outbreaks we know about. Most states provide only total numbers of nursing home deaths and don't give details of specific outbreaks. Notable among them is the nation's leader, New York, which accounts for 1,880 nursing home deaths out of about 96,000 total residents but has so far declined to detail specific outbreaks, citing privacy concerns.
Experts say nursing home deaths may keep climbing because of chronic staffing shortages that have been made worse by the coronavirus crisis, a shortage of protective supplies and a continued lack of available testing.
And the deaths have skyrocketed despite steps taken by the federal government in mid-March to bar visitors, cease all group activities, and require that every worker be screened for fever or respiratory symptoms at every shift.

But an AP report earlier this month found that infections were continuing to find their way into nursing homes because such screenings didn't catch people who were infected but asymptomatic. Several large outbreaks were blamed on such spreaders, including infected health workers who worked at several different nursing home facilities.
This past week, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that regulates nursing homes issued recommendations urging nursing homes to use separate staffing teams for residents, and to designate separate facilities within nursing homes to keep COVID-19 positive residents away from those who have tested negative.
Dr. Deborah Birx, who leads the White House coronavirus response, suggested this past week that as more COVID-19 tests become available, nursing homes should be a top priority.
"We need to really ensure that nursing homes have sentinel surveillance. And what do I mean by that? That we're actively testing in nursing homes, both the residents and the workers, at all times," Birx said.

Russia Stirs Distrust in Latest COVID-19 Pandemic Narratives
Mon, 13 Apr 2020 10:11:22 -0400
Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

As the global battle against the COVID-19 pandemic continues, another, more subtle COVID-19 battle is happening in the world of written and spoken word. Russia and China are actively engaged in the COVID-19 information battle and the United States appears to be the target of the campaign. Some of this campaign is actually a dusting off of an old playbook for Russia. There are distinct parallels between the language above and Operation Infektion, the Soviet propaganda effort to tie the AIDS epidemic to the United States. In the early 1980s, the Soviets published numerous articles implicating a US Bioweapon program for the massive, rapid spread of AIDS in Africa and South America. While these well coordinated information campaigns are being launched against the United States, internally the country is simply battling itself.
My company, IST Research, initiated a data collection campaign to capture online conversations pertaining to COVID-19 in the Russian language. The campaign captured over 400,000 documents posted on four different platforms (Twitter, Vkontakte, YouTube, and Telegram) by a diverse collection of users and groups. Our analysis of the collected data reveals that the Russian news community and social media trolls continue to exploit the global pandemic to disseminate inflammatory narratives and outright falsehoods. We also have evidence that they have infiltrated distinct online communities through conspiracy theories and misinformation. We have identified three specific narratives, launched by Russian malign influence operators, to enhance doubts about the course of global events surrounding COVID-19. In all three narratives, Russian media and social media operators seek to contest facts with countless alternative accounts that delegitimize the global response to COVID-19 pandemic and shift blame to the United States.
The Russian news community was found to have employed a sophisticated network of Social Media users to push misinformation regarding possible COVID-19 medication and vaccines. In a series of stories that broke in early April, major Russian media sites such as Vesti and RIA repeatedly claimed that the Russian population is immune to Coronavirus due to their use of the Description Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine since the 1950’s. Standard Russian disinformation tactics of mass dissemination and repetition, across VKontakte and Twitter, spread news of a “successful” COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Russian Government’s Research Center (also known as Vector). The narrative was pushed with a sense of urgency to counter conversations spread over Telegram that alleged that “coronavirus was created in the Vector laboratory in the science city of Koltsovo near Novosibirsk.” This rumor was started by the video maker, Alexander Thorne, who has since been a target of a Russian government’s investigation.
The Russian news community relied heavily on conspiracy theories to appeal to readers, with the most important of those theories being, the United States developed the Coronavirus in “military biological laboratories near the borders of the Russian Federation and China.” This narrative isn’t recent or unique to Russia. Many of the headlines that emerged from Iranian and Chinese media websites since February indicated a US role in the COVID-19 pandemic with a tone reserved for communities that distrust the United States. However, while those early stories gained minimal traction on social media, the frequent repetition of this false narrative through the end of March appears to have enhanced the belief of social media users in this narrative. These social media users have started providing sustained attention and distribution to the narrative as of March 27th, as seen in Figure 2.
Social media users interacting with this narrative posted a combination of jokes, fabricated historical information and political opinions to voice their belief that COVID-19 is a U.S. biological weapon. In an internet poll that has been continuously running on the drom.ru forum since March 15, the majority of respondents believe that COVID-19 is a non-Russian lab-made virus, and 1237 forum users engaged in conversations surrounding the “resistance of Russians to coronavirus.”
On YouTube, this narrative received unmatched popularity compared with other platforms after Radio NOD released a recorded conversation with Evgeny Fedorov, a popular conspiracy theorist and member of the United Russia party, in which he highlighted his agreement with the view that the United States might be behind the Coronavirus epidemic. Fedorov’s interview, which received over 900 comments and was viewed by 27,000 users, gave unprecedented credibility and validation to the narrative and shifted the conversation from who ignited this pandemic to why the United States needed COVID-19.
On Twitter, a conspiracy emerged on April 4 claiming that President Trump’s activation of military reservists intends to suppress an anti-government social explosion in the country, rather than fight coronavirus. This was found to be among the most popular theories on VKontakte and Facebook, where users appear to be more susceptible to circulating dubious claims. Users interacting with this narrative were also found to be involved in broader spread of disinformation targeting US nationals through the exploitation of existing US forums and domestically trending hashtags like #QAnon and #SpyGate.
For instance, the prophecy series “Restored Republic via GCR” issued a new release in English, Revolution in the USA. This release describes how the American military participates in dismantling the “Deep State” and interferes in November 2020 elections. US troops were sent to Europe to participate in NATO exercises, and although they were suspected of involvement in the arrests of Deep State actors in Europe; Trump will win the 2020 election. The series also claims arrests of former U.S. presidents will occur in early 2021. All arrested persons will be offered the option of “Death of Rommel,” which means a choice between suicide and trial, which can lead to public shame.
We thought it was important to pull out a few examples of the actual profiles being used to spread disinformation. Primary incubators and disseminators of disinformation on VKontakte combine falsehoods alongside factual content (another chapter from the Russian Disinformation Playbook) to appeal to a mass audience. Our analysis reveals that user groups who impersonate authentic entities tend to be more successful in engaging with users and exhibiting a degree of impact in the information environment. For this report, we studied the activity of a Vkontakte page impersonating the Central Intelligence Agency and publishing historically leaked materials alongside inflammatory interpretation of events related to COVID-19 and the upcoming 2020 elections. Our graph analysis (Figure 6) indicates that the sharing pattern and hashtag usage by @CIA_Langley page enabled a vastly growing reach to audiences outside of the page’s insulated sphere and into other platforms such as Twitter and the Web.
We also identified seven Vkontakte users that maintain the @CIA_Langley page and regularly post interactive content. Looking at the account Lana Charisma (@Charismalama), it appears that it engages in a broader two-sided propaganda network: one publishing pro-Russia anti-US propaganda through @CIA_Langley, and another publishing sensationalist anti-Russia posts through the account’s public interface. Reasonable interpretations of this strategy might be that the user attempts to repel any suspicions about the account’s activity or attempts to gradually lure anti-Russia voices into a dynamic anti-US sphere.
Politically active communities on social media present a critical vulnerability that malign influence operators can exploit. By far, Russian disinformation has attracted substantial attention on multiple platforms and successfully engaged with users in different languages, suggesting that no user online is immune to propaganda and manipulation. Social media consumers across the United States face an additional challenge as they get exposed to disinformation crafted with a satirical tone and driven by political clickbait, which tempts users who are eager to reinforce their political identity online to further disseminate disinformation. Combatting this blatant disinformation requires continues tracking of media platforms and, where necessary, direct engagement with vulnerable users to effectuate a safe and propaganda-free environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are prepared to share all raw data collected with this and our other COVID-19 studies, just ask! info@istresearch.com
