Coronavirus and white supremacy movement:
____________________________________________________________

This is not the whole picture:

Behind the organized Russian Nationalists are the Intelligence Services and the Russian Jewish Mafia, IMHO.

As paradoxically as it sounds. Including the retired and semi-retired, but in fact quite active members. And they, in turn, are controlled by the New Abwehr, a hypothetical entity and the term used by me for descriptive purposes, and which most likely includes the German BND, whose traditional rightist orientation should raise little doubts. At the same time, the Abwehr after the WW2 adopted the leftist, Social Democratic orientation. They use both, whatever suits their purposes.

So, the picture might be complex but it is important to understand it fully. Their operations on the American and the Western European soils, including the local surrogates and criminals, are very likely. It is very good that they were found and identified, but it is just the first step. It is very possible, that they and the other similar groups have a hand in spreading the current epidemic as the tool of the Bioterrorism and Biowarfare, and this has to be investigated in depth.

On the basis of my analysis of the epidemic clusters in the New York State (see the previous posts), I have the impression, whatever it is worth, that they (whoever "they" might be, mostly the leadership of these groups), are already preparing to acquire the Real Estate properties, on the cheap, in the conquered and subdued, as they project it, America.

This is the War: semi-secret and semi-transparent, still undeclared, but War. The opponents and enemies have to be identified accurately and beyond the reasonable doubt; they use the multiple masks and covers, for the greater efficiency.

Behind all these "Russian Nationalists" are the ethnic Tatars and the half-Jews - the traditional Abwehr's recruits. They have nothing to do with Russia or "Russianness", they are just the pawns, expendable foot soldiers, and the convenient tools of Mafia, GRU, and FSB.

State Dept. labels white supremacist group terrorists for 1st time ever

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Yahoo Good Morning America - Latest News & Headlines.

The Trump administration has taken the historic step of designating a white supremacist group as a global terrorist organization, sanctioning a Russian organization and three of its leaders Monday.
The new designation is an escalation in tactics, giving the U.S. government increased enforcement tools against what experts have warned is a growing threat -- white supremacist groups recruiting violent individuals across international borders to train and conduct attacks -- but one that President Donald Trump has at times downplayed.
"Today's designations send an unmistakable message that the United States will not hesitate to use our sanctions authorities aggressively and that we are prepared to target any foreign terrorist group, regardless of ideology, that threatens our citizens, our interests abroad or our allies," said the State Department's top counter terrorism official, Ambassador Nathan Sales.
The white nationalist group, known as the Russian Imperial Movement, or RIM, has provided paramilitary training to neo-Nazis and white supremacists, and recruited from overseas, especially Europeans, but reportedly including some Americans as well, according to Sales.
Among other plots, two Swedish men were recruited by RIM, brought to St. Petersburg for 11 days of paramilitary training, including weapons use, hand-to-hand combat, and "woodland and urban assault," per Sales. Months later, the two men returned to Sweden and conducted two bombings outside a cafe and a migrant center in Gothenburg, with a third attempted bombing failing to detonate.
Sales wouldn't preview any other designations of white supremacists, but said the administration "will not hesitate to aggressively use" the same authority to sanction other similar groups that incite, facilitate, direct, or plan attacks, including, in RIM's case, by providing training.
The designations also target three of RIM's leaders -- Stanislav Anatolyevich Vorobyev, Denis Valliullovich Gariev and Nikolay Nikolayevich Trushchalov -- and will allow the Treasury Department to freeze any of their or the organization's assets moving through the U.S. financial system. The Homeland Security Department will also be granted broader authority to deny entry to the U.S. to individuals with ties to RIM.
"We've seen what RIM-trained terrorists can do in Europe, and we want to make sure that RIM is not able -- or any terrorist group is not able -- to accomplish something similar here in the United States. ... (Designating RIM) enables us to better protect our borders, to keep these terrorists out of our country and to deny them resources they may use to plan additional training that could harm our interests," Sales said, while declining to say what kind of assets the group has that the U.S. could seize.
The designation doesn't allow the Justice Department to bring charges against Americans who provide material support to RIM, but Sales said that U.S. law enforcement has other authorities to go after any of its supporters, referring questions on possible prosecutions to the Department of Justice and the FBI.
Sales wouldn't say what contact the Trump administration had with the Russian government ahead of the announcement or whether Vladimir Putin's government has been helpful in combating white supremacist terrorism. Instead, he called on Moscow and all governments to use their own authorities to deny violent actors' ability to travel and their access to the international financial system.
Senior U.S. officials have been warning for years now that the threat of racially or ethnically motivated terrorism is growing. That includes white supremacist violence in the U.S., where an anti-immigrant gunman killed 20 people at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart and an anti-Semitic gunman killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
In January, U.S. law enforcement also arrested seven alleged members of "The Base," a militant neo-Nazi group that advocates for a "violent insurgency" to incite a race war, overthrow the U.S. government and create a white nationalist state.
"We are starting to see racially motivated violent extremists connecting with like-minded individuals overseas online," FBI Director Christopher Wray told the House Homeland Security Committee in November. "In some instances, we have seen some folks travel overseas to train," particularly in eastern Europe.
Sales warned Monday that even when not in direct communication, these groups and individuals inspire each other, including how the El Paso shooter said he was motivated by an attack months earlier in Christchurch, New Zealand, where a white supremacist killed 49 people at a mosque.
After the El Paso shooting, Trump called for all Americans to "condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy." But the president has also downplayed the threat of white supremacist violence, saying after the Christchurch shooting that the issue is "a small group of people that have very, very serious problems."
Trump has also drawn criticism for proposing a ban on all Muslims to the U.S., not immediately rejecting the support of David Duke, the former KKK Grand Wizard, during his campaign, and saying there were "very fine people on both sides" after the August 2017 clash between white nationalists and anti-racist protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Nosocomial Transmissions of Sars-Cov-1 and Sars-Cov-2 - GS
__________________________________

"Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is plausible, since the virus can remain viable and infectious in aerosols for hours and on surfaces up to days (depending on the inoculum shed). These findings echo those with SARS-CoV-1, in which these forms of transmission were associated with nosocomial spread and super-spreading events,5 and they provide information for pandemic mitigation efforts."

Hypothetically, for the fecal aerosol, the survivability of the virus, in the air and on the surfaces, might be even higher, and possibly, significantly. This might explain the rapid transmissions, by the nosocomial pattern, in the similar environments: hospitals and nursing homes, prisons, and large ships. These issues were addressed previously.

There are no reasons to doubt that the type of transmission is much different in the present Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic.

Early coronavirus CDC tests didn't distinguish between virus and water - Business Insider businessinsider.com/early-coronavi… Posted by mikenov on Sunday, April 5th, 2020 8:59pm mikenov on Twitter

It is possible, that early mishaps and confusion with testing (possibly, the acts of sabotage) contributed into the initial broad wave of the hospital admissions, since the clinical symptoms of the various severe pneumonias and the specific Coronavirus infection are practically indistinguishable.

Recently it became known that the tiger in the Bronx zoo was infected by his human handler (the details are yet unknown).
If cats are susceptible, and can hypothetically transmit to humans (the cross-infectivity seems to be logical and plausible), and if the fecal to air mode is present, then the domestic pet cats litter boxes might be the sources of infection, which possibly might come from the cat food. This hypothesis is easy to examine by surveying those who test positively for this factor: owning cats and contacts with the cats litter boxes.

The nosocomial character of the current Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic, in the light of GI tract involvement, and the specific clusters: hospitals and nursing homes, prisons, and large ships, has to be examined in details ans addressed. It also has the direct effect on the management of the patients and the regional epidemics.

Hospital-acquired infection - Wikipedia

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Wikipedia - Recent changes [en].

hospital-acquired infection (HAI), also known as a nosocomial infection, is an infection that is acquired in a hospital or other health care facility. To emphasize both hospital and nonhospital settings, it is sometimes instead called a health care–associated infection (HAI or HCAI).[1] Such an infection can be acquired in hospital, nursing homerehabilitation facility, outpatient clinic, diagnostic laboratory or other clinical settings. Infection is spread to the susceptible patient in the clinical setting by various means. Health care staff also spread infection, in addition to contaminated equipment, bed linens, or air droplets. The infection can originate from the outside environment, another infected patient, staff that may be infected, or in some cases, the source of the infection cannot be determined. In some cases the microorganism originates from the patient's own skin microbiota, becoming opportunistic after surgery or other procedures that compromise the protective skin barrier. Though the patient may have contracted the infection from their own skin, the infection is still considered nosocomial since it develops in the health care setting.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated roughly 1.7 million hospital-associated infections, from all types of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi combined, cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths each year.[2] In Europe, where hospital surveys have been conducted, the category of gram-negative infections are estimated to account for two-thirds of the 25,000 deaths each year.[3] Nosocomial infections can cause severe pneumonia and infections of the urinary tractbloodstream and other parts of the body.[4][5] Many types display antimicrobial resistance, which can complicate treatment.
Coronavirus: Tiger at Bronx Zoo tests positive for Covid-19

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from BBC News - Home.

A four-year-old female Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the coronavirus.
The tiger, named Nadia, is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected with Covid-19 in the US.
The Bronx Zoo, in New York City, says the test result was confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.
Nadia, along with six other big cats, is thought to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo keeper.
The cats started showing symptoms, including a dry cough, late last month after exposure to the employee, who has not been identified.
"This is the first time that any of us know of anywhere in the world that a person infected the animal and the animal got sick," Paul Calle, the chief veterinarian at the zoo, told Reuters news agency on Sunday.
There have been isolated instances of pets testing positive for the coronavirus elsewhere in the world, but experts have stressed there is no evidence they can become sick or spread the disease.
Mr Calle said he intends to share the findings with other zoos and institutions researching the transmission of Covid-19.
"We tested the cat [Nadia] out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world's continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus," the zoo said in a statement.
Nadia, her sister Azul, as well as two Amur tigers and three African lions who showed symptoms, are all expected to make a full recovery, the zoo said.
The big cats did have some decrease in appetite but "are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers", it said.
The zoo said it is not known how the virus will develop in animals like tigers and lions since various species can react differently to new infections, but all the animals will be closely monitored.
None of the zoo's other big cats are showing any signs of illness. All the tigers showing symptoms were housed in the zoo's Tiger Mountain area. It is unclear if the others will be tested.
All four zoos run by the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York City, including the Bronx Zoo, have been closed to the public since 16 March. New measures will now be put in place to protect the animals and their caretakers at all the facilities.
This coronavirus was first detected in humans in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.
The coronavirus (called Sars-CoV-2, which causes the disease Covid-19) is thought to have originated in wildlife and been passed to humans via a live animal market in Wuhan.
The pandemic has been driven by human-to-human transmission, but the infection of Nadia raises new questions about human-to-animal transmission.
There have been less than a handful of isolated reports of companion animals testing positive for coronavirus, including two dogs in Hong Kong.
There is "no evidence that any person has been infected with Covid-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats," the zoo's statement noted.
That is also the view of the World Organisation for Animal Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), which says there is no evidence that pet dogs or cats can pass on the coronavirus.
Dr Sarah Caddy, Veterinarian and Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, is among experts to respond to the reports.
"It is surprising that the tiger has become infected with what must have been a fairly low dose of virus - we can assume the tiger did not have continual close contact with the asymptomatic zoo keeper," she said about the transmission.
"It is also interesting that the tiger showed clinical signs consistent with Covid-19 in humans. Although scientific proof is lacking, the chance this is just a coincidence is low."
Conservation experts have warned that the virus could pose a threat to some wildlife like the great apes - and have said measures are needed to reduce the risk of wild gorillas, chimps and orangutans.

Sinophobia threatens to endanger Biological Weapons Convention – The Manila Times

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from The Manila Times:
Of course, this is not the "Chinese" or "Asian" virus. We do not really know , where it came from, and how. After the acute phase, this should be investigated. And this "Sinophobia" is very stupid, just like any other phobia.

SYDNEY: With the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to Europe and the United States, a bout of Sinophobia seems to have infected the Western media. On March 29, Australia’s “60 Minutes” TV program — that is well known for sensational reporting — broadcast a report that portrayed China as the villain of the Covid-19 pandemic, and just stopped short of calling for war against China.
This reminded me of the propaganda that the Anglo-American media broadcast around the world about alleged “weapons of mass destruction” that Saddam Hussein had, that led to the attack and invasion of Iraq in 2003.
With the US surpassing China in the number of Covid-19 deaths, the Western media would like us to believe that this is because of some form of bio-warfare that originated from China. The “60 Minutes” program claimed the virus originated in Wuhan in mid-November and China hid it from the world until late January. By which time they had allowed thousands of Chinese to fly out of Wuhan to all parts of the world. They showed a map that tends to suggest China has sent an army of bio-warfare soldiers to infect the world.

‘Chinese virus’
Unfortunately, the Indian media is no different from the Anglo-American media in their coverage of the Covid-19 threat. There is a clear slant toward labeling the virus as a Chinese virus. I watched on “India Today” television a report on how the TikTok application is used in India to discourage Muslims from following the physical distancing measures introduced by the Indian government. They claimed it is a campaign by Pakistan using this application and they labelled TikTok as a “Chinese app,” implying a Chinese hand of course.
As the inefficiencies of Western governments and especially their health systems are exposed, we are bound to see more such reports coming out of Anglo-American media, in particular. If the Asian media is not able to confront this with a counter narrative, the stage will be set to condition populations around the world for a possible war scenario in Asia, similar to the chaos created in the Middle East beginning with the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
For some years now, even going back to the Obama administration, the US has been looking for an excuse to start a war in Asia. Deft diplomacy by South Korean leader Moon Jae-in avoided such a scenario in East Asia, and some skillful geopolitical diplomacy by Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte has avoided a similar scenario in the South China Sea.
While the virus wreaks havoc across the globe, many conspiracy theories are being transmitted pointing out an outbreak of bio-warfare, with US and China accusing each other. It appears that the conspiracy theorists do not know that there is a Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) for which both countries have signed up.
The global media is becoming the battleground in a propaganda war between the two sides. One of the most potent weapons the Western media has is to paint China as a secretive authoritarian state that hides the truth — thus anything they say cannot be trusted. This narrative is widely at play currently in the Anglo-American media and unfortunately transmitted by some Asian media.
Coronavirus timeline
While the “60 Minutes” program said China had hidden information about the virus, the truth is on Dec. 31, 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) China office was informed by the Chinese health authorities that “cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology” has been detected in Wuhan City, and on Jan. 3, 2020, a total of 44 patients with such pneumonia were reported to the WHO by China.
When the WHO asked for more information, the Chinese promptly provided reports giving details of the clinical signs and symptoms. They also said that some patients were operating dealers and vendors at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan City.
On January 11 to 12, WHO received further detailed information from the Chinese National Health Commission about the outbreak. China informed WHO that the market was closed on January 1 and that a total of 763 close contacts, including healthcare workers, had been identified and followed up.
China also shared the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus on January 12, “which will be of great importance for other countries to use in developing specific diagnostic kits,” WHO said in a statement on January 12.
From February 9 to 24, WHO sent a 25-member joint mission to China that included experts from the US, Japan, Germany, Singapore, Russia, South Korea as well as from China and the WHO. During the nine-day visit there was a lot of consultation with the Chinese health authorities, along with collection of testing samples from patients.
WHO released a 40-page report of its findings, pointing out that they had been receiving daily reports from Chinese authorities on investigation clusters and household transmission studies.
WHO paid glowing tribute to China’s handling of the health emergency, saying “in the face of a previously unknown virus, China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile and aggressive disease containment effort in history” and they recommend that the world urgently look at China’s experience in responding to Covid-19, because it “provides vital lessons for the global response.”
All this information is freely available from the WHO website. But instead the Western media ignores it and continues to paint China as a threat to global peace claiming that its “authoritarian” model hides information. To balance the picture, media needs also to consider China’s claim of a bio-warfare conspiracy.
Bio-warfare conspiracy
On Aug. 5, 2019, the New York Times (NYT) reported that a US Army deadly germ research center in Fort Detrick in Maryland was shut down by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over safety concerns. The report also said in 2009, research at the institute was suspended because it was storing pathogens not listed in its database. “The institute is a biodefense center that studies germs and toxins that could be used to threaten the military or public health, and also investigates disease outbreaks,” noted NYT.
Just a few weeks before the first Covid-19 victims were identified in Wuhan, an exercise named “Event 201” was held at John Hopkins Center for Heath Security in Baltimore, Maryland, that was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where the theme was stimulating a high-level pandemic exercise, which produces 65 million deaths.
The press release says: “Event 201 simulates an outbreak of a novel zoonotic coronavirus transmitted from bats to pigs to people that eventually becomes efficiently transmissible from person to person, leading to a severe pandemic. The pathogen and the disease it causes are modeled largely on SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), but it is more transmissible in the community setting by people with mild symptoms.”
It goes on to describe the virus as originating in pig farms in Brazil that quietly spreads to the community. It then transmits by air travel to the US, Europe and China, and ultimately creates health scare chaos globally.
While the Covid-19 outbreak is spreading at a rapid pace in the US, there is a widespread theory espoused especially by the right-wing media there that the virus spread from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, either where it was being engineered as a bio-weapon, or being studied in the lab after being isolated from animals, then escaped or leaked because of poor safety protocol. Chinese have argued that the emergence of the virus in the same city as China’s only “Level 4” biosafety laboratory, is pure coincidence.
This is where the BWC passed by the United Nations in 1972 that entered into force in March 1975 comes into play. During the Third Review Conference in 1991, state parties agreed to provide annual reports on specific activities related to the BWC such as data on research centers and laboratories, information on national biological defense research and developments programs, etc.
Media need to ask — have the US and China adhered to the BWC in their research or stimulation activities? Spread of Covid-19 and the accompanying bio-warfare conspiracy theories indicate the BWC needs an urgent review and state parties need to be transparent in complying with its mandate.
In a statement issued on the 45th anniversary of the convention’s implementation on March 26, the Indian government called upon the international community to help strengthen the WHO to fully and effectively implement the BWC. In view of the 9th Review Conference of the BWC coming up in 2021, India has called upon state parties to negotiate “a comprehensive and legally binding protocol” to the convention. India has also highlighted the dangers from the possible use, in future, of microorganisms as biological weapons by terrorists.
The international media need to shed some of its Sinophobia, to put in the public agenda the need to strengthen the BWC during its review in 2021.

The newly opened makeshift hospital in the Manhattan convention center — originally dedicated to non-coronavirus patients — will now shift to COVID-19 treatment, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday.

“The original plan for Javits was that it be used to take non-COVID patients from hospitals to open up hospital beds,” Cuomo said in a statement. “However, the number of COVID positive patients has increased so dramatically that it would be beneficial to the state if Javits could accept COVID positive patients.”
Patients currently in the 2,500-bed Javits hospital will be transported to the USNS Comfort ship, which docked in Pier 90 on Manhattan’s west side this week carrying 1,000 hospital beds, The Washington Post reported.
“This is a game change,” tweeted Councilman Mark Levine (D-Manhattan), who chairs the Council’s health committee. “Will allow our overwhelmed hospitals to discharge patients who no longer need acute care.”
Both facilities were originally expected to provide care to New Yorkers facing illnesses other than the virus as a way to relieve badly overwhelmed city hospitals.

As the epicenter of the United State’s coronavirus outbreak, New York has documented 48,462 confirmed coronavirus cases as well as 1,046 virus-related deaths as of Thursday morning.
It is not immediately clear when Javits will begin accepting coronavirus patients, or when those currently in the center will be transferred.
Cuomo said he had asked President Trump Thursday morning for permission to use the US Army-run Javits hospital to treat coronavirus and that Trump approved his request later in the day.
“I thank the president for his cooperation in this pressing matter and his expeditious decision making,” Cuomo said.

 • The coronavirus has wreaked havoc in New York, infecting more than 122,000 people – more than China’s reported total – and killing over 4,100.
 • Gov. Andrew Cuomo has shut down schools, put the city on pause, closed non-essential businesses, ramped up testing, and created makeshift hospitals.
 • In the month since New York’s first coronavirus case was reported, though, hospitals have been overrun. Morgues are filling to capacity, medical resources are falling short, and frontline healthcare workers are facing “apocalyptic” scenes.
 • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.
In New York City, officials have commandeered three iconic landmarks – Central Park, the Javits Convention Center, and the National Tennis Center – and erected medical tents and hospital cots in these spaces.
The symbolism couldn’t be more unsettling: Places known for bringing throngs of people together have become triage sites as the city struggles with its rapidly escalating coronavirus case count and death toll.
The United States is the new epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with at least 312,400 cases – that’s one in five of all COVID-19 cases worldwide – and over 8,500 deaths. New York state is one of the hardest-hit areas, with 122,000 patients – more than all of China has reported – and at least 4,159 deaths.
The state’s hospitals are inundated, morgues are overflowing, and exhausted medical workers, forced to don trash bags due to a lack of protective gear, are testing positive for the coronavirus themselves. At least three nurses, a well-known pediatric neurosurgeon, and an ER doctor have died.

All this in just over a month.
The coronavirus is “truly vicious,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a press briefing on Sunday. He described the illness as an “effective killer.”
Here’s how COVID-19 ravaged New York so quickly.

An outbreak in the suburbs

The earliest reports of coronavirus cases emerged in China in late December, though experts think it had likely already been circulating there for about a month. The disease has since spread across Asia, Europe, and the US: More than 1.2 million people have been infected, and the death toll has crossed 65,700.
New York’s first confirmed case, reported on March 1, was a healthcare worker in her 30s who’d returned from a trip to Iran. Its second was 50-year-old Westchester County man, Lawrence Garbuz, who works at a law firm with offices near Grand Central.
Garbuz, who fell ill around February 27 and tested positive on March 2, was New York’s first case of community spread: He had neither traveled to any countries with severe outbreaks, nor had he been exposed to a coronavirus patient.
The town of New Rochelle, where he lives, became the state’s first hotspot. Officials asked 1,000 people to quarantine themselves, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed a 1-mile containment area around a synagogue where more than 100 families had come into contact with Garbuz.
Cuomo, however, has said neither of these patients were likely the true first in the state.
“I have no doubt that the virus was here much earlier than we even know,” and before it reached any other state, he said.

When strengths became weaknesses

Many consider New York City’s constant motion and high density to be among its greatest strengths, along with its residents’ reliance on public transit.
At the same time, “that spatial closeness makes us vulnerable,” as Cuomo said.
The coronavirus spreads easily from person to person when individuals come within 6 feet of each other – something hard to avoid in New York City, given that it houses 27,000 people per square mile. Infected people can transmit the virus for days before showing symptoms. Some carriers remain asymptomatic the whole time.
What’s more, the virus can survive for 72 hours on metal railings and plastic seats like those in subways and buses.
After its first two confirmed cases, New York City’s numbers shot up: There were 88 on March 12, then 464 by March 16. The total passed 2,000 on March 18, and by March 20, there were more than 5,600 cases. The 10,000-case threshold came less than two days later.
Cuomo declared a state of emergency on March 7, then banned gatherings of over 500 people five days later.

Restaurants, Broadway shows, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other Manhattan landmarks were shuttered to promote social distancing and slow the virus’ spread to “flatten the curve” so healthcare systems wouldn’t get overwhelmed.
But it all seems to have come too late.

‘Four months, six months, nine months’

More mass closures soon followed.
New York state schools shut down on March 15; Cuomo put the whole city on pause a week later, shutting down non-essential businesses and issuing a stay-at-home order.
This is not a short-term situation … It is going to be four months, six months, nine months,” he told reporters.
Subway stations became deserted. Bodega shelves were emptied. Children and parents in New York faced an unfamiliar situation: staying at home around the clock, indefinitely.

The lockdown is a “double whammy,” Cuomo has said, because New York state is on track to lose $10 to $15 billion in revenue because of the costs of fighting the virus. But there’s no other choice: Cuomo has projected that 40% to 80% of the state’s residents will likely contract COVID-19.
“All we’re trying to do is slow the spread. But it will spread – it is that contagious,” he said.
On March 23, the city reported more than 13,000 cases. The number more than doubled in four days, to 26,700 on March 27. By March 30, more than 38,000 New Yorkers had gotten the virus, and 45,707 had been infected by April 1.
But those rapidly rising numbers are in part a reflection of New York’s aggressive testing.
According to data collected by the COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer effort run by The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal to tally tests in every state, New York had conducted more than 283,600 tests as of Friday. By comparison, New Jersey, the second-hardest-hit state, has completed over 75,300 tests as of Saturday.
Even so, thousands of sick people have been unable to get tested. Lingering test shortages have led New York, like California and Washington, to reserve tests for those who need it most: critically ill patients and symptomatic healthcare workers and first responders.
At least 1,400 New York Police Department employees have contracted the coronavirus, as have some 282 members of the New York Fire Department, more than 580 MTA workers, and 4,500 ambulance workers.
People presenting mild symptoms in New York are being asked to stay home.
On the whole, the US’s diagnostic abilities have been riddled by errors and delays. The CDC at first designed a faulty test, and the ongoing test shortages still prevent officials from fully understanding the scale of the epidemic.

‘Apocalyptic’ scenes in New York’s hospitals

Many of New York’s wealthy seem to have fled the city. But most people are spending these early spring days cooped up in cramped apartments, relying on delivery and takeout at mealtimes. Some emerge briefly to walk their dogs or go for a run, warily giving a wide berth to anyone they pass.

Unable to handle the ceaseless flow of patients, hospitals are running out of space. A doctor at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens described the scene as “apocalyptic” to The New York Times, and said patients have died while awaiting treatment.
A nurse told Business Insider that people with coronavirus symptoms were showing up at the NYU Medical Center every three to five minutes on March 25. Dr. Jolion McGreevy, the medical director of Mount Sinai Hospital’s emergency department, said because so many people are trying to ride out the illness in their homes, some hold out until their needs are dire, then arrive at hospitals in “impending respiratory failure.” New York City’s ambulance workers are now advised to leave cardiac arrest patients at home if they can’t detect a pulse.
Elderly people and those with preexisting health conditions are more vulnerable to the worst effects of the coronavirus. But one in five patients admitted to New York hospitals are under 44, Bloomberg reported.
“So many patients are not fitting the picture that we’ve been told from China or Italy. This is not just elderly patients; it’s anyone,” Kaedrea Jackson, a doctor at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, told Bloomberg.

Like ‘fighting a ghost’

Meanwhile, a severe shortage of medical supplies looms.
When the outbreak peaks, patients will require 30,000 more ventilators than the state currently has on hand, according to Cuomo. Officials also need to boost New York’s capacity from 50,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds to 110,000 and 30,000, respectively, he said.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers, including masks, medical gowns, face shields, and gloves, is already in short supply. As a result, #GetUsPPE, a rallying cry from doctors fighting COVID-19, has become a movement.
But New York City nurses have been reduced to using trash bags to ward off the virus, while one woman tweeted that she was given a Yankees rain poncho in lieu of a medical gown.

To shore up the collapsing healthcare system, the Javits Center was outfitted with 2,500 beds, Central Park with 68, and Flushing Meadows-Corona Park with 350. The USNS Comfort, a floating naval hospital, will hold 1,000 extra beds for non-coronavirus patients. As of Saturday evening, the newly christened Javits New York Medical Station was treating 40 people, according to The Washington Post, while the USNS Comfort was 2% full, with 20 patients, as of Friday.
Thousands of healthcare workers have been asked to dust off their scrubs, medical students have graduated early, and reinforcements are en route to Manhattan from all over the US. On Friday, New York officials sent out a mobile push alert asking “licensed healthcare workers” to support overwhelmed hospitals.
“It’s like we’re fighting a ghost,” one doctor told Business Insider. His identity, while confirmed by Business Insider, is being kept anonymous because he hasn’t been authorized by his hospital to speak to the press. “I know it’s out there, but I have no idea where it’s coming from, who it’s affecting the hardest, and how to stop it.”

‘I don’t know how many more bodies I can take’

The coronavirus is killing a person roughly every four minutes in New York State, and about every six minutes in New York City, based on the COVID Tracking Project and city data. The state experienced its deadliest day yet, Cuomo said on Saturday, with 630 more people succumbing to the disease over the past 24 hours.
Refrigerated semi-trailers and cooled tents are stationed outside hospitals to serve as makeshift morgues – nondescript portents of doom.
Patrick Marmo, a state-licensed funeral director and embalmer of 30 years, says his company, International Funeral Service of New York, typically handles about 40 cases at any given moment. On March 30, he was trying to manage more than 140.

“I don’t know how many more bodies I can take,” Marmo told Business Insider, explaining that frontline “deathcare” workers are struggling with their own limited capacity.
“We are working night and day,” he said. “The integrity of everyone’s loved one is our number-one priority. I’ve thought about putting a refrigerated trailer outside the funeral home. But that’s horrendous. If I do that, what does it say? Do I put that in plain view?”

‘We are still headed up the mountain’

On March 31, Cuomo estimated that the “apex” of the outbreak was still 21 days away.
“We’re all in search of the apex and the other side of the mountain. But we are still headed up the mountain,” he said.
He added, “this is a moment that is going to change this nation.”
On Saturday, Cuomo projected an even bleaker outcome: New York’s COVID-19 peak is now within a “seven-day” range, and the state isn’t yet prepared.
“It feels like an entire lifetime,” he told reporters in Albany. “I think we all feel the same, these stresses, this country, this state – like nothing I’ve experienced in my lifetime.”
He amended this prediction on Sunday, saying that it remains unclear whether the “apex” represents a point on the curve of infections or a plateau. This makes it hard to tell if New York is nearing the worst or has already reached that stage in its outbreak. The number of hospitalizations and deaths dropped in the last 24 hours, he said, but it’s simply “too early to tell” if this has any significance.
Cuomo has taken some criticism for a proposed $400-million cut in Medicaid funding to state hospitals – cuts suggested by a panel he convened. “It’s a shot in the gut, ” Dr. David Perlstein, the chief executive officer of St. Barnabas Hospital, told The New York Times. If the cuts are enacted however, they may not go through until after the pandemic is over, City and State New York reported.
Acknowledging that hospitals are scrambling to deal with the daily eruption in coronavirus cases, Cuomo said that they are expected to receive more than $150 billion in grants by way of the government’s $2 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill.
“The places that are getting the most funding now because of what the federal government did are the hospitals. They are doing better than anyone else,” Cuomo said, per The Times.

New York is only the beginning

The governor has frequently been at loggerheads with President Donald Trump, with Cuomo bashing Trump’s proclivity to play politics as “anti-American” and Trump pushing responsibility onto state authorities.
What’s apparent, however, is that no community in New York can handle the virus by itself so officials are surging and flexing the capacity, staff, and resources of the entire healthcare system so so as to “balance the patient load” among all available hospitals, Cuomo said.
This wisdom needs to be applied nationwide, he said, because experts anticipate New York to be just the first hotspot of many. It should be viewed as a warning, not an outlier, they say.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator on the White House coronavirus task force, expressed concern on Thursday that New Jersey is also in the throes of a serious outbreak. About 35% of all administered coronavirus tests there have come back positive – the same rate as in New York, according to Yahoo News.
Medical officials are also nervously eyeing Louisiana, where 26% of tests are coming back positive.
“Michigan, Connecticut, Indiana, Georgia, Illinois – so that should tell you where the next hot spots are coming – are at 15% of their tests positive, and then Colorado, DC, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are at 13%,” Birx said.
She added that the limited data she has so far suggests “not every American is following” social-distancing rules.
“Today it is New York,” Nirav Shah, a former New York state health commissioner, told Vox. “Tomorrow it will be somewhere else, and only by coming together as a nation will we get this under control.”

After Discovering a Sailor With Coronavirus, the U.S. Navy Crowded Dozens Into One Room — ProPublica

It wasn’t a surprise when the U.S. Navy announced Sunday that the fast-spreading coronavirus had made its way on board one of its ships, infecting a sailor on the USS Boxer, docked in San Diego.
But what happened next raises questions about how the Navy will respond to the virus within the tight quarters of its seabound vessels.
On Monday morning, in response to the discovery of the infected sailor, the warship’s leaders ordered dozens of senior enlisted sailors and officers into a cramped room on the ship to brief them on the crisis and proper social distancing, according to a sailor who attended the meeting.
That action, taken as the Navy is still evaluating who aboard the ship had come into contact with the infected sailor, runs counter to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines aimed at controlling the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the sailor, the meeting in the ship’s wardroom, a gathering place, lasted about 30 minutes and forced about 80 crew members to stand roughly 2 to 4 feet from one another — far less than the 6-foot spacing called for by the CDC.
The meeting on the ship — which also has outdoor spaces that possibly could have been used instead — left some attendees feeling angry and worried that they’d been placed in unnecessary danger aboard the vessel, the sailor said.
“Definitely not enough room to maintain appropriate distance,” said the sailor, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. “People are wondering why we gathered in a room contradictory to CDC guidance.”
A Navy spokesman confirmed the meeting took place, but he would not comment on whether it was appropriate or violated federal infection control guidelines.
In a statement, the spokesman said that Navy commanders have been told “to the largest extent possible to implement social distancing,” including avoiding large gatherings and maintaining a 6-foot space from other sailors when possible.
According to the Navy’s statement Sunday, a sailor assigned to the Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, had tested “presumptive positive” for the virus that causes COVID-19. It was the first case of a sailor on board a Navy ship apparently contracting the disease. The sailor, the statement said, is now quarantined at home, along with other members of the crew believed to have been in close contact, while the ship’s crew conducts “a thorough cleaning” and takes “appropriate preventative measures.”
Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist at Yale School of Medicine, told ProPublica that “putting 80 to 100 members of the crew together in a small space without knowing all who were exposed to the original index case means additional transmissions may have happened in that meeting.”
“A Navy ship with coronavirus infection is like a cruise ship with coronavirus infection,” he said. “People are in close quarters and there is easy spread of infection.”
According to the Navy website, ships like the Boxer have crews of roughly 1,200 sailors.
The Navy spokesman told ProPublica that the initial investigation into whether any other personnel came into close contact with the infected sailor was completed, but whether other sailors were infected is still being evaluated.
To make matters worse, the sailor who attended Monday’s meeting said they were briefed that limited testing kits are available.
The case of the Boxer illustrates how challenging it may be for the Navy to avoid the spread of the highly infectious virus aboard ships and submarines that require sailors to work in close quarters, sometimes for monthslong missions.
Traversing a Navy ship, for example, requires walking through a series of tight corridors with low ceilings and stale air. Some passageways are so narrow that for one sailor to pass another, one practically needs to press flat against the wall. There are doors along corridors — a measure to keep any flooding contained. A sailor walking the length of the Boxer would have to stop multiple times to turn a wheel or pull a latch to open a door, then do the same thing on the other side to seal the door again. Stairways are closed off in similar fashion.
Eating on a ship is done in close quarters as well. Sailors dine cafeteria-style, handing their plates to servers to scoop food from large bins like at a buffet. At peak hours the tables would be packed, with everyone sitting fairly close to one another — exactly the kind of dining that many cities have temporarily banned as a measure to stop the spread of the virus. The Boxer is about 840 feet long, about 80% of the length of the Eiffel Tower if it were laid flat.
It’s unclear when the Boxer will head out on its next mission, but its webpage pledges a commitment to safety: “Everything we do on and off BOXER will be done safely.”

Brett Crozier: Ex-Navy commander who sounded alarm over coronavirus outbreak on ship tests positive for virus

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

Capt. Brett Crozier
began exhibiting symptoms before he was removed from the warship on Thursday, the Times reported, citing two Naval Academy classmates of Crozier's who are close to him and his family.
CNN has reached out to the Navy for comment. A Navy spokesman declined to comment to the Times on Crozier's status.
Crozier was relieved of his command last week by acting US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly, for what Modly called "poor judgment," going outside the chain of command and too widely disseminating a memo over an unsecured system.
In a memo sent earlier last week, Crozier pleaded with Navy leaders that "decisive action is required" to remove a majority of the ship's personnel and isolate them for two weeks. The letter was published in the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Sunday
defended Crozier's removal
, telling CNN's Jake Tapper the move is an example of how "we hold leaders accountable for their actions."
"I think acting Secretary (Thomas) Modly made a very tough decision -- a decision that I support. It was based on his view that he had lost faith and confidence in the captain based on his actions," Esper said on "State of the Union." "It's just another example (of) how we hold leaders accountable for their actions."
There is an ongoing investigation into the matter, Esper told Tapper.
Esper said that
155 sailors from Roosevelt
have tested positive for Covid-19, and that more than half of those aboard the aircraft carrier have been tested. There have been no hospitalizations, according to the secretary.
CNN's Barbara Starr contributed to this report.

Diarrhea May Be First or Only Coronavirus Symptom in COVID-19 Patients Experience, Study Suggests

Diarrhea may be the first or only symptom some COVID-19 patients experience, according to the authors of a study.
The study, published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, involved 206 patients at the Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the virus first emerged. The patients were classed as having mild COVID-19 cases as they didn't have shortness of breath or respiratory distress, and had a relatively high blood oxygen saturation level. The patients were sent to the facility despite their mild symptoms so they could be monitored and quarantined during the peak of the Wuhan outbreak.
The group included 48 who only had digestive symptoms such as diarrhea; 69 with digestive and respiratory symptoms; and 89 with only respiratory symptoms. On average, the patients, who lived in Wuhan, were aged 62, and 55.8 percent were female.
Of the 67 who had diarrhea, 19.4 percent had it as their first symptom of COVID-19, while the others developed it in the first 10 days after respiratory symptoms. The diarrhea lasted between one to 14 days. For 52.2 percent of patients, their stools were "watery," while for the others it was loose, not watery. Abdominal pain, meanwhile, was rare.

Some 62.4 percent of patients with digestive symptoms also had a fever. 73.1 percent who had diarrhea had a concurrent fever. Of those, 20.4 percent had an upset stomach before the fever; 10.2 percent after fever, and the others at the same time. Those who also felt sick and felt nauseous were more likely to have a fever than those with only lower digestive symptoms.
Patients who had digestive symptoms were more likely to seek care later than those with respiratory problems, the team found. And the period between the start of their symptoms and their bodies being rid of the virus was also longer. It was also more common for them to have the virus in their feces, at 73 percent compared with 14.3 percent in those with respiratory issues. The researchers tested the feces of 22 COVID-19 patients and found the RNA, or genetic material, of the new coronavirus in 12 samples.
Some COVID-19 patients may experience issues like diarrhea because the receptor that the virus binds to is expressed at almost 100-fold higher levels in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract than the respiratory organs, the authors said.
As shown in the map by Statista below, the new coronavirus has spread to almost every country and territory in the world. According to Johns Hopkins University, almost 1 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, 47,522 people have died, and at least 195,929 have recovered.
Most studies have focused on severely ill patients, but as 80 percent will have a mild form of the disease it is important to pinpoint their symptoms so those who aren't sick enough for hospitalization can self-quarantine, the authors said. Mild patients unwittingly spreading the virus "appears to be a major driver of the pandemic," they said.
"The longer disease course in patients with digestive symptoms might reflect a higher viral burden in these patients in comparison to those with only respiratory symptoms," the authors wrote.
The team highlighted the sample size of their paper was relatively small, and larger studies need to be conducted to explore digestive symptoms in mild COVID-19 patients further.
"This study does not directly confirm that viral particles in stool are infectious and capable of disease transmission, but our results offer more evidence that COVID-19 can present with digestive symptoms, that the virus is found in the stool of patients with diarrhea, and presents more indirect support of possible fecal transmission. Further research is vital to determine if COVID-19 can spread via the fecal-oral route," they said.
According to the CDC, common COVID-19 symptoms include a fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states: "The risk of catching COVID-19 from the feces of an infected person appears to be low. While initial investigations suggest the virus may be present in feces in some cases, spread through this route is not a main feature of the outbreak.
"WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways COVID-19 is spread and will continue to share new findings. Because this is a risk, however, it is another reason to clean hands regularly, after using the bathroom and before eating."
On Wednesday, the authors of a separate study on nine COVID-19 patients in Munich, published in the journal Nature did not find a replicating form of the virus in stool samples despite identifying high levels of viral RNA. Referring to the name of the new coronavirus, they said: "further studies should, therefore, address whether SARS-CoV-2 shed in stool is rendered non-infectious through contact with the gut environment," they wrote.
Co-author Brennan Spiegel, professor of medicine and public health at Cedars-Sinai, told Newsweek: "I think the main message is COVID-19 is not just cough.
"Clearly we're focused on cough and respiratory symptoms because those can be serious, those could cause mortality. So it's natural that our initial focus has been on patients arriving at hospital with shortness of breath, cough and pneumonia. And certainly that is a major manifestation of this disease.
"But we're starting to learn from our colleagues in China and around the world now that there's a large group of people who may not ever report for care, or at home with digestive symptoms—diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, less so abdominal pain but that too, low appetite—who are struggling to determine if they have COVID-19 or not."
Spiegel stressed people should, as always, try to be as hygienic as possible when using the bathroom to prevent the spread of disease, including by closing the toilet lid when flushing to stop particles from being expelled into the air.
Brendan Wren, professor of microbial pathogenesis at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who did not work on the study, told Newsweek: "There are many potential sources of gastrointestinal symptoms that may not be related to COVID-19. Indeed, the fact that patents got COVID-19 it may suggest poor hygiene and co-infections with other gastrointestinal pathogens.
"What is most interesting in this paper is the demonstration of direct shedding of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in the feces of these patients which may suggest alternative routes of transmission of COVID-19 apart from respiratory transfer."
Dr. Jurgen Haas, professor of viral genomics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, told Newsweek he and his colleagues reviewed the paper and concluded: "The implications are quite striking we think that this is an important study."
Haas explained: "It was known before that a certain percentage of COVID-19 patients have diarrhea and gastrointestinal symptoms, in addition to respiratory symptoms. We also know this from some of the other common cold coronaviruses and for example from Influenza.
"What is new is that a subgroup of COVID-19 patients with no or non-severe respiratory symptoms has a high likelihood to be positive for the SARS-CoV2 virus to be positive in the stool (and spread it via fecal-oral transmission). This subgroup has a later onset of the disease, but they contain and spread the virus for a longer period of time.
He said the study suggests the "gastrointestinal infection and fecal-oral spread are much more important in COVID-19 than we thought previously."
Pointing out the limitations, Haas said he and his epidemiologist colleagues who also reviewed the study said there were "minor flaws," such as an imbalance in the variables, for instance in gender, age, and symptoms which may bias some findings.
Haas said the work "obviously further supports the recommendation of frequent hand washing, using hand sanitizers and not touching the face with your hand. There are multiple other viruses (such as Noro-, Rota- and Adenoviruses) that can cause diarrhea, and SARS-CoV-2 is only one of those and most likely not as frequent as the others."
"However, the study suggests that individuals with diarrhea with or without respiratory systems which had been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case should definitely be tested for COVID-19," he said.
This article has been updated with comment from Professor Brennan Spiegel.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ADVICE FOR AVOIDING SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19)

Hygiene advice
 • Clean hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub.
 • Wash hands after coughing or sneezing; when caring for the sick; before, during and after food preparation; before eating; after using the toilet; when hands are visibly dirty; and after handling animals or waste.
 • Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
 • Avoid touching your hands, nose and mouth. Do not spit in public.
 • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing. Discard the tissue immediately and clean your hands.
Medical advice
 • Avoid close contact with others if you have any symptoms.
 • Stay at home if you feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and runny nose, to avoid potential spread of the disease to medical facilities and other people.
 • If you develop serious symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) seek medical care early and contact local health authorities in advance.
 • Note any recent contact with others and travel details to provide to authorities who can trace and prevent spread of the disease.
 • Stay up to date on COVID-19 developments issued by health authorities and follow their guidance.
Mask and glove usage
 • Healthy individuals only need to wear a mask if taking care of a sick person.
 • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
 • Masks are effective when used in combination with frequent hand cleaning.
 • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. Clean hands if you touch the mask.
 • Learn how to properly put on, remove and dispose of masks. Clean hands after disposing of the mask.
 • Do not reuse single-use masks.
 • Regularly washing bare hands is more effective against catching COVID-19 than wearing rubber gloves.
 • The COVID-19 virus can still be picked up on rubber gloves and transmitted by touching your face.

Coronavirus: Petition calling for WHO Director-General to resign

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

An online petition calling for the resignation of World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has gained traction lately, garnering over 718,000 signatures, claiming that the United Nations health official and the organizational efforts towards the coronavirus outbreak were unacceptable.
The petition
, posted to Change.org and translated into multiple languages including French, Spanish, German and Arabic, added that the Tedros is "unfit" for his role as head of the organization and should forego his status immediately.
"Part of it is related to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus's underestimating the coronavirus," the petition reads. "We strongly think Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is not fit for his role as WHO Director General. We call for [his] Immediate Resignation."
The main point of contention was the failure of Tedros to designate the coronavirus outbreak in China as a global health emergency in late January.
The petition alleged that instead of investigating and independently verifying the number of deaths and those infected within the Chinese provinces, Tedros simply relied on the word of the Chinese government, which initially downplayed the outbreak within their country in order to stave off the negative economic effects that were to come with the viral spread, apathetic to worldwide public health implications.
"A lot of us are really disappointed, we believe WHO is supposed to be politically neutral. Without any investigation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus solely believes the death and infected numbers that the Chinese government provided," the petition stated, adding that Taiwan "should not be excluded from WHO" due to its political contentions with mainland China, alleging that this shows favor to the Chinese government.
Deputy Prime Minister of Japan Taro Aso made mention of the petition, adding that its release came on the backdrop of worries that WHO would have to change its name to the "Chinese Health Organization."
More than 1.1 million people have reportedly been infected by the
novel coronavirus
worldwide and 60,049 have died, according to a Reuters tally.
Infections have been reported in more than 200 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
"Please help the world to gain faith to the UN and WHO again," the petition concluded.

Asian and Pacific theatre of World War I - Wikipedia

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Wikipedia - Recent changes [en].

The Asian and Pacific theatre of World War I consisted of various naval battles and the Allied conquest of German colonial possessions in the Pacific Ocean and China. The most significant military action was the careful and well-executed Siege of Tsingtao in what is now China, but smaller actions were also fought at Bita Paka and Toma in German New Guinea.
All other German and Austrian possessions in Asia and the Pacific fell without bloodshed. Naval warfare was common; all of the colonial powers had naval squadrons stationed in the Indian or Pacific Oceans. These fleets operated by supporting the invasions of German-held territories and by destroying the East Asia Squadron of the Imperial German Navy.
Is Germany Considering Maritime Missions in Asia? – The Diplomat

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from The Diplomat.

“Our partners in the Indo-Pacific region…feel increasingly pressured by China’s claim to power. They want a clear sign of solidarity. For valid international law, for intact territory, for free shipping. It is time for Germany to send out such a signal by showing its presence in the region with its allies.”
— German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer
Without explicitly mentioning the term, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer recently foreshadowed a novel development: a German Freedom of Navigation Operation — or FONOP — in the South China Sea. While her November 2019 keynote address on security policy focused on the future relationship between the EU and NATO and the development of the German defense budget, the passage of the speech which sketched the contours of a foreign deployment of German armed forces (Bundeswehr) was an important development that has remained neglected by most reporting. For a country with a deeply embedded culture of military restraint since the aftermath of World War II, such a mission would be a remarkable step.
There is some precedent. Berlin is participating with larger contingents in international military operations in Afghanistan, Mali, and Iraq, and elsewhere. It is also participating in the European Union Naval Force-Somalia (EU NAVFOR Somalia), the European Union’s mission to protect humanitarian aid supplies to Somalia, ensure free navigation, and combat piracy off the coast of Somalia. And a German officer has already participated in a FONOP conducted by the French Navy in Asia.
But the Bundeswehr’s current and past foreign deployments have primarily served crisis management purposes and have been justified neither by Germany’s national interests nor by the behavior of a major power in world politics. Against this background, it is understandable that Germany’s defense ministry has been preparing for its participation in such an operation silently for months. A final decision is to be made in January 2020, according to Berlin government sources. The plans for the operation are not yet known in detail, but rumors have circulated in Berlin government circles that a German ship should cross the Strait of Taiwan, which China regards as its territorial waters.
A Controversial Mission
It’s not surprising that such a mission is controversial for Germany. In particular, parts of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), of which Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is a member, have expressed skepticism. In a newspaper interview in November 2019, the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Rolf Mützenich, criticized Kramp-Karrenbauer, describing the idea of German engagement in the Indo-Pacific as one that “contradicts all the security policy ideas of the SPD.”
Perhaps more powerful though, is Chancellor Angela Merkel’s skepticism fueled by fears of negative consequences for German-Chinese relations. Germany’s relationship with China, especially as a trading partner, enjoys a special place in Merkel’s foreign policy — to which other concerns are subordinated. After all, Germany’s economic ties with China are close. Large German corporations such as Volkswagen export to and produce in the country, and their balance sheet results depend on the development of the sales market in China. Germany, on the other hand, is one of the most important trading countries for the People’s Republic. In 2018, goods worth 199.3 billion euros were traded between the two countries.
The German public is also divided by this new type of foreign deployment. In September 2019, in a representative survey conducted by the Körber Foundation, 49 percent of Germans questioned agreed to Germany participating in maritime missions to protect freedom of navigation and international trade routes; 43 percent opposed. On the other hand, a German military presence in the Indo-Pacific is in the interest of the German naval leadership, which has wished for such an operation for some time. It’s also a signal to its own soldiers that German maritime influence is not constrained to the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. The situation has also changed with regard to military capabilities: a German frigate of the latest F125 Baden-Württemberg class could be sent on such a mission for six months from mid-2020.
The Chinese response to a German FONOP mission is a wildcard that will be impossible to ignore. It is likely that the bilateral relationship will at least temporarily deteriorate, but this is arguably already happening. Many German foreign policymakers now share the sober analysis of European-Chinese relations presented by the EU Commission in March 2019. Occasional contacts between the German government and opposition members in Hong Kong (for which the German ambassador was summoned to the Chinese Foreign Ministry) are the root of the most recent tensions between Berlin and Beijing. But, above all, it is the German debate about Huawei’s business within its borders and China’s growing influence in Germany, more broadly, that is pushing the two countries apart. Norbert Röttgen, chair of the Bundestag‘s Foreign Affairs Committee recently called for the company to be excluded from the German 5G network for fear of espionage and sabotage.
Multilateralism as a Driver
The German government has historically rejected Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea or the strait between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. Yet Berlin has also so far brushed off calls from European neighbors like Great Britain and France as well as regional powers Japan, South Korea, and Australia to get involved in freedom of navigation operations. Meanwhile, German politicians have pointed out that Germany has no security interests in this region and does not participate in power or regulatory disputes with the People’s Republic of China.
A German FONOP offers a threefold opportunity. First, such a mission would powerfully underline Germany’s commitment to the international rule-based order, to which Chancellor Merkel and Foreign Minister Maas repeatedly refer. Second, it would allow Berlin, in times of transatlantic disgruntlement, to reject the American accusations of a lack of commitment to security policy and free-riding. Third and finally, it would send a signal to the European allies that Germany does not want to leave France alone to assume Europe’s leading role in foreign policy in view of global geopolitical shifts.
One important question still needs to be answered in this context, namely that of a possible multilateral framework for action. In order to send a powerful signal of European unity, the German government should seek close cooperation with London and Paris in this regard. Berlin has decided not to participate in the incipient European maritime mission in the Strait of Hormuz, which is led by France. The reason is the concern that German ships could be drawn into an armed conflict in the region. This is not a good omen for the necessary European unity in the waterways of Asia.

U.S. scientists say China hampers search for origin of deadly virus

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

American scientists are actively working to learn the origin of the deadly coronavirus behind the pandemic now spreading around the world, but say a lack of Chinese virus samples has hampered research.
Officials and experts in virology and epidemics tell The Washington Times that researchers need to learn the origins of the virus to find treatments and vaccines and to better prepare for future pandemics.
Robert G. Darling, a medical doctor and expert on biological weapons formerly with the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland, said it is crucial that researchers find out where the virus originated and how it spread.
“It is imperative that we identify the origin of the SARS CoV-2 virus,” said Dr. Darling, chief medical officer of Patronus Medical.
“The Chinese almost certainly know but they have not shared it. By learning its origin it will better help us understand the biology of the virus and how it behaves.”

A senior State Department official said questions about the origin of the virus need to be answered and noted recent published reports about the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which houses China’s sole high-security virus research center, have raised questions about whether the virus may have leaked.
“It’s the only Level 4 lab in the PRC, built in response to SARS in 2003, so the question is a valid one,” the official said.
However, the official added that “until we are absolutely certain where this is coming from, it would be irresponsible to put something out about lab origins” of the virus.
“That’s for scientists to figure out and I know they’re actively working it. Those results should be public eventually,” he said.

China’s government has been largely silent on the origin of the virus, while saying the virus made a natural jump from bats to humans or from bats to another wild animal and then to humans.
Recently, Chinese government spokesmen have called for scientific inquiries into the origin of the virus but have not disclosed whether the government is conducting such a study. The Chinese have asked for scientific inquiries into whether the virus was created by the United States — a charge U.S. officials have vehemently dismissed as disinformation.
Authorities in Beijing say the virus outbreak began at a wild animal market in Wuhan, based on reports that many of those first infected worked at the market.
But the skeptics point to a Chinese scientific study that also reported that some early victims had no connection to the market.
New insights
They also note the emergence of new insights into the virus that have emerged in recent weeks both from Chinese state media and unofficial online reports, including a censored scientific paper by two Chinese researchers.
The two scientists, Xiao Botao and Lei Xiao, are with the state-run universities in Guangzhou and Wuhan. They argue in the paper that the virus may have escaped from a laboratory near the market.
As for the official Chinese government explanation of a natural transmission, they said it is possible “yet little proof has been reported.”
The researchers said the new virus is very similar to a bat coronavirus found in horseshoe bats, and that the Wuhan Center for Disease Control located close to the suspect market was studying bat viruses.
The center “hosted animals in laboratories for research purpose, one of which was specialized in pathogens collection and identification,” they stated.
The Wuhan laboratory reported Chinese horseshoe bats are natural reservoirs for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus(SARS-CoV) behind the 2002 pandemic and could explain the bat virus research.
“In addition to origins of natural recombination and intermediate host, the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan,” the scientists said.
Another clue appeared on YouTube from a Western blogger in China, Matthew Tye, known by the handle “Laowhy86,” who posts frequently about travels and events in China and has 435,000 subscribers.
“I made a very important discovery to finally put an end to the speculation from the Chinese government that the #Coronaviruscame from the USA, Italy, or anywhere else,” he tweeted Wednesday.
Mr. Tye said in a video posted that day that he had new details about the virus’ origin. Information obtained through open-source research identified a worker at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Huang Yanling, as the suspected “Patient Zero” for the outbreak in Wuhan.
A U.S. official with access to intelligence said without elaborating that the YouTube video is accurate. Mr. Tye could not be reached.
The laboratory issued a statement denying Ms. Huang was the locus of the epidemic. Her photo and biography were removed from the institute website, where they had been posted earlier along with other researchers.
Screen captures of internet postings from the Wuhan Institute of Virology included one for a job opening in November that sought researchers to study links between “coronavirus and bats.” A second job posting on Dec. 24 revealed the Institute was looking to hire multiple researchers. It stated, “We have discovered a new and terrible virus and would like to recruit people to deal with it.”
The YouTube video then mentioned that Mr. Xiao of the South China University of Technology had identified Ms. Huang as Patient Zero who became infected during a laboratory accident and later died. The report said the virus was transmitted to the public by staffers who attended her funeral.
Seeking samples
Kelvin Droegemeier, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, asked scientists with the National Academy of Science on Feb. 6 to “rapidly examine” the origins of the new virus.
In a response letter the same day, the academy said the closest known relative of the new virus appeared to be “a virus identified from bat-derived samples collected in China.”
“The experts informed us that additional genomic sequence data from geographically- and temporarily-diverse viral samples are needed to determine the origin and evolution of the virus,” said Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Science in the letter.
“Samples collected as early as possible in the outbreak in Wuhan and samples from wildlife would be particularly valuable,” the letter stated.
The letter said Bai Chunli, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was willing to share virus samples and was “working” with the University of Texas Medical Branch for sharing the virus.
However, Kenneth Plante, director of the virus repository at the Texas university, said China refused to provide any samples needed for studying the virus origin because of what he said was the “political climate.”
Details about the virus will help prepare for the next pandemic and how to develop countermeasures, Fort Detrick’s Dr. Darling said.
Mr. Droegemeier’s Feb. 6 letter cited a disputed, pre-publication scientific draft paper by Indian scientists that suggested the virus may have been manipulated in a laboratory, saying that highlighted the need to learn the origin.
The Indian scientific paper was withdrawn for further study but concluded that “taken together, our findings suggest unconventional evolution of 2019-nCoV that warrants further investigation.”
A second State Department official said there is a lot of public information already on where the virus originated but that the U.S. government has not attempted to address the issue.
“In terms of litigating where the virus was born, that is not something that we have tried to do here because there’s just no way here for us to know,” the second official said.
“Instead we’re focusing on the known facts. … We know the outbreak originated in China and the Chinese government was the first to know. And because of those two facts, which by the way have been acknowledged by the WHO and the Chinese government, [Chinese government officials] have a special responsibility to be transparent.”
Chinese officials have pointed to U.S. research at the ScrippsResearch Institute and published in journal Nature Medicine that concluded, “We can firmly determine that SARS-CoV-2 originated through natural processes.”
That same study, however, states that because China has worked on bat coronaviruses at Level 2 security laboratories, and that the SARS virus has leaked from Chinese labs in the past that the virus could have escaped.
“We must therefore examine the possibility of an inadvertent laboratory release of SARS-CoV-2,” the Nature Medicine study says.

2020s[edit]

On 24 March 2020, during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, three sailors aboard the deployed vessel tested positive for COVID-19, a coronavirus disease identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness.[45] Within a few days, that number climbed to dozens. Theodore Roosevelt was reported to be the first ship in the U.S. Navy to have a COVID-19 outbreak while at sea; Theodore Roosevelt docked at Guam on 27 March 2020.[46][47] By 31 March, the number of infected sailors was over 100, and the captain, Brett Crozier, pleaded for help from the Navy.[48][49] The US Navy ordered the aircraft carrier evacuated with a skeleton crew of 400 to remain aboard the vessel to maintain the nuclear reactor, the fire-fighting equipment, and the ship's galley.[46] On 2 April, acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly relieved Crozier of his command for sending the request for assistance over non-secure email to a "broad array of people" rather than up the chain of command, adding that Crozier "allowed the complexity of the challenge of the COVID breakout on the ship to overwhelm his ability to act professionally".[50] Crozier was to remain in the Navy and retain his rank.[50] Several members of the House Armed Services Committee criticized the decision, stating that "the dismissal of Captain Crozier at this critical moment, as the sailors aboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt are confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic, is a reckless, political move that reeks of undue command influence."[50]

Introduction - Guide to Ship Sanitation - NCBI Bookshelf

1Introduction

1.1. Significance of ships to health

Ships can have significance to public health beyond their role in ship-acquired infection. For example, ships can transport infected humans and other vectors, such as mosquitoes and rats, between ports and can therefore act as a means of national and international dissemination of disease and disease agents.
Historically, ships have played an important role in transmitting infectious diseases around the world. The spread of cholera pandemics in the 19th century was thought to be linked to trade routes and facilitated by merchant shipping. Efforts to control the movement of human disease on ships can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when, in 1377, Venice and Rhodes denied access to ships carrying passengers infected with the plague, giving rise to the term “quarantine”. On arrival, travellers were detained in isolation for 40 days before they were allowed to proceed to their final destination. Overcrowding on ships, filth and lack of personal hygiene were often associated with epidemics of rickettsial typhus fever. Preventive measures, such as quarantine, delousing and maintaining personal cleanliness by use of soap, were gradually adopted, and the incidence of typhus decreased.
More than 100 outbreaks of infectious diseases associated with ships were reported between 1970 and 2003 (Rooney et al., 2004). Reported outbreaks included legionellosis, influenza, typhoid fever, salmonellosis, viral gastroenteritis (e.g. norovirus), enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection, shigellosis, cryptosporidiosis and trichinosis. Naval ships, cargo ships, ferries and cruise ships were all affected, often with serious operational and financial consequences.
These reported outbreaks represent just a small proportion of the total disease burden attributable to ship-acquired disease. For every notified and reported case listed in outbreak reports, there are likely to be many more cases that go unreported.
If proper control measures are not in place, ships are particularly prone to disease outbreaks. Ships contain isolated communities with close accommodations, shared sanitary facilities and common food and water supplies. Such conditions can be favourable to the spread of infectious diseases. The inevitable publicity that comes along with a disease outbreak on board can have a serious financial impact on the ship owners and those relying on use of the ship for transport or leisure.
It is estimated that 1.2 million seafarers are employed on ships around the world (IMO, 2009). As many spend months at sea, sometimes in remote regions of the world, cargo ships on long voyages contain particularly isolated communities. Good sanitary conditions on ships are crucial to both the health and the welfare of seafarers.
By taking sensible preventive control measures, it is possible to protect passengers, crew and the public at large from disease transmission related to ships. To the extent possible, control strategies should be targeted to minimizing contamination at source. From a public health perspective, the focus should be on proactive and preventive measures rather than reactive and curative. For example:
 • the design and construction of the ship should be as failsafe as possible with respect to maintaining a sanitary environment;
 • the food, water and materials taken on board should be as safe as possible;
 • crew should be well trained in ship sanitation and have all the equipment, facilities, materials and capacity necessary to permit the maintenance of a sanitary environment on board;
 • a risk management system should be put in place and maintained to ensure the identification, reporting and mitigation of public health risks.

1.2. Scope, purpose and objective

The primary aim of the revised Guide to ship sanitation is to present the public health significance of ships in terms of disease and to highlight the importance of applying appropriate control measures. The guide is intended to be used as a basis for the development of national approaches to controlling the hazards that may be encountered on ships, as well as providing a framework for policy-making and local decision-making. The guide may also be used as reference material for regulators, ship operators and ship builders, as well as a checklist for understanding and assessing the potential health impacts of projects involving the design of ships.

SAN FRANCISCO – At least eight strains of the coronavirusare making their way around the globe, creating a trail of death and disease that scientists are tracking by their genetic footprints.
While much is unknown, hidden in the virus's unique microscopic fragments are clues to the origins of its original strain, how it behaves as it mutates and which strains are turning into conflagrations while others are dying out thanks to quarantine measures.
Huddled in once bustling and now almost empty labs, researchers who oversaw dozens of projects are instead focused on one goal: tracking the current strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that cause the illness COVID-19.

Closing the toilet lid is highly recommended amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report, as a group of researchers have found that the bug can spread through fecal matter that escapes from the bowl during a flush.
The disease caused by the coronavirus, which scientists had already warned can be spread from fecal-oral transmission, can also be transmitted via “aerosolized feces,” according to Forbes, citing a study published by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
Aerosolized feces can be propelled into the air through what’s called a toilet plume — the spread of aerosols, sometimes containing infectious fecal matter, caused by a flush.
“Close the lid and then flush,” a mechanical engineering professor from Purdue University, Dr. Qingyan Chen, told Forbes. He said it was a simple solution to help control the spread of the disease through toilet plumes.
Chen told the outlet that closing the lid can prevent 80 percent of the fecal particles from escaping into the air.

State Dept. labels white supremacist group terrorists for 1st time ever

THE REAL COUP WAS IN 2016 | THE PSYCHOANALYSIS OF INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS

Image result for Rightist wing of the GOP
The real Coup was in 2016, and it was performed by the corrupt, pro neo-Nazi oriented, Abwehr bought and subverted, the Rightist wing of the GOP, the Broidy-Manafort ring in its latest reincarnation; and by the other alumni of the Abwehr Law School, a.k.a. Roy Cohn’s Law Firm: Little Duce Giuliani, “dirty trickster” Roger Stone, and their circles, climbing and clawing their ways to Power and Money. And apparently, some officers of the New York Branch of the FBI were their ideological and operational “stormtroopers”. Search the Anthony Weiner sexting affair scandal as FBI operation, much under-researched, under-investigated, and under-publicized.
If only a part of all these legitimate and well based suspicions and accusations against the New York branch of the FBI are proven or sufficiently demonstrated, this question would be quite legitimate: Was at least a part of the NY FBI branch corrupt, rotten, in Trump’s pocket, and under possible influences of the foreign agents?

Investigate the “STORMTROOPERS” – the alleged “pro-Trumpists” within the NY branch of the FBI, and look into the general health of the whole branch.

Investigate James Kallstrom and others!

Investigate the Abwehr – Roy Cohn Law School and all its “graduates”.

Investigate the political corruption in both parties. Investigate the corruption and failures within the FBI, and their root causes. The proof is in the pudding, sadly but undeniably.
